Long Duration Closed Circuit Breathing Apparatus

The mining industry utilises the Drager BG4 Breathing Apparatus. The set which has a 4 hour closed circuit duration meets with EN 145 standard

Long Duration SCSR's

MRS have an emergency supply of long duration self contained self rescuers namely the Auer SSR 90. In 1998 a decision was made to remove all SCSR's which were ten years or older from service in line with the manufacturers recommendations.

Sub Strata Radios

The sub strata radio system was specifically designed for the most adverse underground conditions. The system is pre-tuned on low frequencies of 340, 510 and 980Khz with an output
of  one watt.

The equipment is intrinsically safe with the exception of the surface console and battery chargers. It is waterproof and protected against differential pressure.

These systems are not only deployed for mines rescue but in a wide variety of normal mining operations and can be integrated with the mines telemetring system.

Specialised Rescue Equipment

Rescue stations house a range of hydraulic and pneumatic equipment such as cutters, spreaders and lifting bags for emergency use by Brigadesmen.

Rescue stations are also equipped with two types of rope rescue equipment suitable for for a wide variety of rescue operations as well as ore pass / geological inspections.

In addition MRS has sufficient supplies of emergency fire fighting equipment to supplement the mines requirements during prolonged fires or incidents Each rescue station have emergency vehicles and trailers equipped to meet the immediate needs in the event of a fire. Other trailers house a wide range of ancillary equipment for specialised rescues.

Rescue Rooms

Mines rescue teams display an enormous amount of pride in the quality of their rescue rooms. These rooms are equipped and maintained to a minimum standard with regard to breathing apparatus storing, washing, drying and sterilizing facilities. Oxygen booster pumps and oxygen storage standards are also strictly maintained. Excellent team disciplines have ensured that without exception, all equipment is well maintained in a state of readiness for an emergency.

Trapped Person Location Device TPL

This equipment has been acquired to be utilised to locate persons trapped during a fall of ground underground. The intrument uses sophisticated seismic sensors which are placed at strategic positions to determine the proximaty of the person trapped.

"Tru Gas" Gas Analyser

MRS has available four of these units to member mines for monitoring gases on the return side of fires thus eliminating the need to deploy rescue teams for gas monitoring. The MRS staff have received full training on the calibration and data collation of the analyser.

Gases sampled, and ranges are as follows :

Oxygen

0-25%

Carbon Dioxide

0-10%

Carbon Monoxide

0-10%

Methane

0-30%

Hydrogen

0-1,0%

Nitrogen

0-80% (by calculation)

The system, which transmits the information via the telemetry network to surface also has the capability of measuring temperature, barometric pressure and air flow at the sampling point.
